Abstract
This point dataset identifies all residential structures in the Cayuga Lake Watershed, and indiciates whether it is served by a municipal sewer system or is expected to have an on-site waste management system. TIGER Census 2000 data was used to estimate the number of individuals per residential structure.
Purpose
This geographic dataset was developed by the Cayuga Lake Watershed Network as part of a larger project, in conjunction with Dr. Douglas Haith and Cornell University, to model nutrient loading in the Cayuga Lake watershed. The model used is the Generalized Watershed Loading Function (Haith and Shoemaker, 1987). Haith, D.A. and L.L. Shoemaker, 1987. Generalized Watershed Loading Functions for Stream Flow Nutrients. Water Resources Bulletin, 23(3), pp. 471-478.

Attribute Accuracy Report
The method for estimating the number of onsite wastewater management systems in the watershed involved first determining both the location of all residential structures and the extent of existing sewer districts, then identifying all the residential structures not located within the boundary of the sewer districts, assuming these residential structures would require onsite wastewater management systems. Though this method may not be precise, it is expected to provide reasonable and sufficient accuracy for estimating non-point source pollution at the scale of the watershed or subwatershed using the GWLF model. U.S. Census block-level data was used to estimate the number of residents per residential structure. The product of this effort was a single geospatial data layer indicating the location of all residential structures with onsite wastewater management systems and the estimated number of individuals using those systems. It is important to note that these numbers and locations are estimates and not precise measurements.

Completeness Report
Includes all residential structures within the Cayuga Lake Watershed measuring over 700 square feet, as identified from aerial imagery captured in 2002 and 2003 in "leaf-off" conditions. The types of structures mapped included houses, mobile homes, apartment buildings, commercial buildings, government-owned buildings, churches, etc. The dataset did not include storage structures such as sheds or barns. The accuracy of this dataset was not assessed directly. However, given the very high level of detail in the aerial imagery, the accuracy of this dataset is expected to be quite high. It is unlikely that structures sufficiently large to be considered inhabitable (non-storage) would be undetectable by this visual analysis. Errors of omission are the most likely errors to be found in this dataset, which received a thorough analysis and review.
