Abstract
Road Centerlines for Tompkins County.
Purpose
The road centerlines serve as a base map for streets and addresses.
Supplemental Information
This data set was derived from the 1991 Tompkins County Planimetric Base Map and updated using field work, aerial photography, the Local Highway Inventory, paper maps, the tax parcel data sets, and digital orthophotos. The roads were joined to the Address.dbf database and several fields were dropped from the original in Fall of 2004 when it was transferred to an ESRI personal geodatabase. For map display purposes, do not show abandoned/proposed roads or roads with restricted access. This can be accomplished by using a filter of ([Access] 5).

Logical Consistency Report
Spatial topology is maintained by the software's robust geometric network topology tools and manually by ensuring that each road intersection forms a node. Additional nodes are created at intersections with major hydrologic features, municipal boundaries, road surface changes, route type changes, and abrupt changes in addressing. The ROADID field is checked using a "frequency" command to ensure there are no non-unique values. The entire data set was reviewed on paper maps by each municipality in 1998.
Completeness Report
Complete for Tompkins County. There is some overlap into adjoining counties.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
Varies, depending on source of centerline (Planimetric Base Map, digital tax maps, aerial photo, raw conversion from paper maps, etc). The accuracy of the data set is limited to the accuracy of the 1991 Tompkins County Planimetric Base Map series.

SORTORDER
Sorting order for use in ArcView and other GIS software packages that do not support many-to-one relationships for geocoding. This database must be sorted first on ROADID, then on SORTORDER for a proper relationship between it and the ROADCL data set to be established. Those address records that are most recent or most likely to represent the majority of real-world address occurences for a particular street segment are given a sort order of 1. Additional address records for the same street segment are given higher SORTORDER numbers, with the highest numbers representing the least-used real-world addresses. ()

SORTNAME
Street name that is used for sorting purposes. Prefix directions are placed last or are spelled out if they refer to places rather than direction. For example, N Cayuga Street would have a sort name of Cayuga Street N, while W Danby Rd would have a sort name of West Danby Road because West Danby is a place, not a direction. ()
