- This polygon data layer represents area codes for Wisconsin in 2000. The dataset was originally published by the Wisconsin Department of Administration in 2000.[This data layer is a polygon shapefile of the area codes in Wisconsin, derived from the Wisconsin Telephone Exchange Boundaries. This data set is referenced to the Wisconsin Transverse Mercator (WTM) projection system, North American Datum 1983 with the 1991 adjustment (NAD83/91).]
- Purpose
- This layer is intended for reference and mapping purposes and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. [This data layer is for use in generalized mapping applications. The level of accuracy does not support detailed local analysis. The data layer is intended for use with GIS software.]

- [The area code coverage was first created by dissolving on an attribute in the Wisconsin Telephone Exchange Boundary coverage. Nearly all area code boundaries correspond with an exchange boundary, with the exception of a small area near the southwestern portion of the Milwaukee exchange. This boundary was created by overlaying the area code coverage with TIGER roads and on screen digitizing. Once changes were made, the coverage was cleaned and converted into a shapefile.]
