Abstract
This feature dataset set contains a polygon data layer that represents wetlands greater than 2 acres and a point data layer that represents wetlands smaller than 2 acres for Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin in 1994. They are feature classes within the geodatabase, FondDuLacCounty_Wetlands_1994.gdb. The dataset was originally published by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in 2006.[Wetlands for Fond du Lac County, WI. The data layer is in Wisconsin Transverse Mercator (WTM) projection system, North American Datum 1983 with the 1991 adjustments.][The wetland layer includes a series of polygon coverages/shapefiles and point coverages/shapefiles that are digitized from 1:24,000 scale Wisconsin Wetland Inventory (WWI) maps. The point coverage includes information for wetlands smaller than 2 or 5 acres (depending on year), dammed ponds and excavated ponds. Map tiles for both sets of data correspond to Public Land Survey System (PLSS) Townships.]
Purpose
This layer is intended for reference and mapping purposes and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. [The data was created with the purpose of obtaining wetland acreage.]
Supplemental Information
AGSL staff supplemented original metadata. For official metadata please see Metadata folder. [Polygon data respresents wetlands greater than 2 acres. Point data represent wetlands less than 2 acres, dammed ponds and excavated ponds.]

Description
[Dataset was created for the sole purpose of finding wetland acreage by township and by county. The wetland information was obtained from the original 9”x9” black and white infra-red aerial photos. The photos are viewed in stereo and the wetland delineations are drafted on to the photos using red ink for the wetland linework, blue ink for the ponds and green ink for text. Wetlands greater than 2 acres are drafted as polygons. Wetlands less than 2 acres, dammed ponds and excavated ponds are labeled as point symbols. Wetland classification codes are then drafted for each polygon. Care is taken when drafting to allow the linework to be free from leader lines and text. Each photo covers approximately four PLSS sections. Each township is made up of about 12 photos (varies based on flight pattern and 60% overlap). The photos are scanned at 850dpi and stored in a 24bit 3-band color TIFF format. The photos are then ortho-rectified using Orthomapper, a software package created by Dr. Frank Scarpace (University of Wisconsin Madison, WI). Control orthophotography is obtained from either the county or from USGS and is converted into Wisconsin Transverse Mercator HARN coordinate system. Once rectified, each township image is brought in to ESRI's Spatial Analyst software and converted into a raster grid and mosaicked together to form a single county grid. This grid is processed using unique mathmatical equations to allow the red, green and blue features to be extracted off of the bw image. This results in a final wetland boundary grid and a point symbol grid. The wetland linework grid is then traced using ArcScan to create the vector linework for the wetland boundaries. The wetlands 2 acres, dammed ponds and excavated ponds are captured as point symbols. Descriptive Arc/Info items are added to each polygon and point. Both layers are labeled and coded accordingly. Wetland acreage is then computed for the county by wetland type and wetland class.]

Process Step
Description
AGSL staff changed name of shapefiles from fonddpw9.shp and fonddxw9.shp to FondDuLacCounty_WetlandPolygons_1994 and FondDuLacCounty_WetlandPoints_1994. Following this a file geodatabse was created named FondDuLacCounty_Wetlands_1994.gdb and the shapefiles were imported as a feature dataset.
