Abstract
This datafile shows the general elevation of the top of the Karnak Limestone in Illinois. These 20- and/or 100-foot isolines were contoured using Geographix and Z-map Plus software. The contours were created using over 32,000 data points from the ISGS Oracle database. The data covers only those portions of the state where the formation is present and does not include any coverage outside of Illinois where the formation may be present. The data was contoured using fault lines for control and manual adjustments were made to the contours as a final refinement of the computer created contours. This data set is intended for use at a scale of 1:100,000 or greater.
Purpose
This data set was created as part of an effort to update some of the ISGS map products utilizing new data and software capabilities. This data set was developed in order to create an updated version of the map published by H.M. Bristol and R.H. Howard in 1976. These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base.

Completeness Report
The point-source data was compiled by ISGS staff from paperwork submitted to the state by oil companies operating in the state of Illinois. These files are archived within the Geologic Records Unit of the ISGS. This subset was compiled from the ISGS?s Oracle database. No attempt has been made to compile all available data. This file does not represent all the well records on file at the ISGS, nor should the absence of data for the formation in question be interpreted to mean that the formation is not present.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
This is a generalized depiction of regional ground condition. Horizontal positional accuracy of the original point-source data is generally unknown. There is considerable variability depending on the source material. Some holes have surveyed locations and are accurate to within a foot, others have only description to the nearest forty acres. Overall, the database administrator estimates that most points are within 500 feet of their correct locations, but no scientific tests have been done to verify this.
